Restoration Superstar Plants

We love our trusty Restoration Superstars!

Based on our field experience, a few plant species stand out as star performers. No plant will guarantee success, but the species on this list are often your best bet.

This article is part of our Species Selection Guide where we share select collections of plants based on their ecosystem services, site condition needs, or material type.

What are Restoration Superstars?

Restoration Superstars are the plants that seem determined to thrive despite the odds: rough handling, poor soil, more or less water and shade than expected. You get the best results by putting the right plant in the right place, but these plants cut you more slack than most.

All on this list are tolerant of full sun.

Most also grow rapidly and, in adequate conditions, will put on many inches or even feet every growing season.

All of the superstars will take moisture fluctuations or overall wetter or drier conditions than indicated. The most tolerant species are noted in the comments as “versatile”.

All plant information comes from our Species Descriptions, where we invite you to read about more plants native to our Pacific Northwest.

Restoration Superstars Plant List

Plants are organized by the soil moisture needs, starting with the wettest. We’ve listed each species in its ideal spot along the moisture spectrum.
